Why Did I Choose Community Development?

It wasn't until my Sophomore year that I decided to enroll in Community Development as my minor. I signed up for a Community Development 400 class simply because my favorite profession of all time was teaching the class - and it seemed interesting. After the first class ended, I realized that this was exactly what I wanted to do in my future, and added it in as my minor.

Community Development Class as NDSU:

The class here at NDSU consisted of mainly grad students and seniors, and was taught by Professor Goreham. The class syllabus outlined that we would be studying the town of Moorhead, Minnesota, and writing an insightful book about the city's history, development and data, along with projected graphs of past and future economic fluctuations. It was a very in-depth project that took the efforts of all 18 of us, plus Dr. Goreham. We ended up finishing the book - which I now have a copy of - and presented our work to the City Council of Moorhead.

How I Foresee CD Being Useful In My Career:

As I will elaborate upon in later posts, I want to travel the world as a major aspect of my career and help companies and communities alike learn the tools of insight, development, growth and networking. Community Development is perfect in the sense that it will give me a vital sense of being an outsider studying the inside of an institution or a community and seeing it from both perspectives, and working on re-building and growing from that vantage point. Additionally, it will give me a set of skills that envelope each aspect of a community for its benefit - rather than specializing in one area, community development classes have taught me to be proficient in everything I do, so nothing gets glossed over in the process.
